Mitwirkung

In Switzerland, Mitwirkung refers to involving residents early in a municipality’s or authority’s plans and projects.

In Switzerland, Mitwirkung is a fixed part of many planning processes: on land-use plans, regulations or neighbourhood development, residents can contribute before a decision is made. The Mitwirkungsverfahren surfaces concerns early and increases acceptance of decisions.

Mitwirkung is usually advisory: the authority takes in feedback, weighs it and explains its decision. It differs from the formal Vernehmlassung through its earlier, more open and often lower-barrier character.

Features of Mitwirkung

  • Early — before the actual decision
  • Usually advisory, not binding
  • Common at municipal and cantonal level
  • Low-barrier, often publicly accessible

With MyIdeas, Swiss municipalities run Mitwirkung digitally: collect ideas, weight them and show the response transparently — without a cookie banner.
